Pepperwood school was started between 1857 and 1864 (reports seem to differ) in a pepperwood grove northeast of Upper Lake on Clover Creek, on or near, the former Mat Johnson ranch. Around 1868-69 the school was moved to the Dewell ranch north of town. This was located where the present day U.S. Forest Service station is now.
By 1884, the school District was split, changing the name of the local school to Upper Lake Grammar School, and the other district became the Middle Creek School District.
A new school was built in town for the Upper Lake School, and a new school for the Middle Creek District was built about 2 1/2 miles north of the present Forest Service station, on land leased from Mary Morrison Henry.
